Influenced by Recall from Honda and GM, LG Starts to Develop Safer LFP Battery 2021-09-07 00:00:00
LG Energy Solution, a subsidiary of LG Chem, LG Energy Solution has started developing its LFP batteries in its Daejeon lab. The battery manufacturer plans to build a pilot line for its lithium-iron-phosphate batteries next year at the earliest. LG’s LFP battery cells will take the pouch form rather than the prismatic or cylindrical cells favored by Chinese battery makers. LG Energy Solution plans to work with its parent company LG Chem to supply the materials it needs for the LFP batteries. Korean media outlet, The Elec, speculates that LG Chem will seek a joint venture with a Chinese partner to supply raw materials for LG Energy Solution’s LFP batteries. TESLA LEADS THE WAY TO LFP CELLS Tesla started using LFP batteries from China-based battery supplier Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL)last year. CATL’s LFP batteries were for Giga Shanghai’s Model 3 Standard Range Plus. Since then, Tesla had started using LFP batteries in the base Made-in-China (MIC)Model 3 and base MIC Model Y. By May 2021, Tesla announced that it would be using LFP batteries in its Megapack energy storage system. And just last month, Tesla gave US-based reservation holders the option to receive a Model 3 SR+equipped with an LFP battery pack. Elon Musk explains Tesla’s LFP Battery strategy for US Model 3 SR+ LFP BATTERY MARKET Tesla's switch to LFP batteries seemed like a gamble when it was first announced-one that has paid off rather well. LG Energy Solution initially resisted developing LFP batteries because iron-based cells have a lower energy density, resulting in shorter ranges per charge. LFP batteries are also heavier than their nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) and nickel-cobalt-aluminum (NCA) counterparts. However, the widespread adoption of LFP batteries by EV makers appears to have changed the company's mind. Tesla only uses LFP batteries for the base variants of its vehicles because of the lower range they provide. However, there are benefits to LFP batteries. For instance, iron-based cells are cheaper to produce and rarely overheat or thermal runaway, something LG Energy Solution might want to explore given the recent issues with GM’s Chevy Bolt EV. Developing LFP batteries could be a good business move for LG Energy Solution in the long run. More EV startups, like Rivian and even Apple, are reportedly expected to use iron-based cells in their base vehicles as well. BOSA Energy is the leading LFP (LiFeP04) battery supplier with over 15 years experience, offering safest battery solutions with overheat or thermal runaway. We has been working on and delivering lithium iron phosphate/LFP battery overseas for excellent safety and long cycle life performance---over 6000 cycles. BOSA LF105, LF230 and LF280 cells/modules are well applied on electric buses/trucks/forklifts/utility vehicles as well as HESS and ESS systems.

Bosa Energy Helps China's First Marine Pure Electric Tugboat Set Sail 2021-09-02 00:00:00
On August 16, the first marine pure electric tug in China——“Yungang electric tug No.1” was delivered for trial operation at Lianyungang port, Jiangsu Province. "Yungang electric tug No.1"can completely replace the traditional high-power oil port as a tug and fill the gap in the field of domestic marine pure electric tug. It’s core power system and equipment are independently developed and designed by China Shipbuilding No.712 Institute, with completely independent intellectual property rights, and its key performance indicators have reached the international advanced level. "Yungang electric tug No.1"has a total length of 35.5m, a ship width of 10m, a full load draft of 3.5m, a speed of no less than 13 knots, a working time of no less than 8 hours, a total power design of 5000 kWh and a forward towing force of 48 tons. The ship uses the high safety lithium iron phosphate battery pack (composed of Bosa marine lf280 battery) of China Shipbuilding No.712 Institute as the main power source, and two 2 MW hollow shaft permanent magnet motors are used as the main propulsion motor for the first time in China. It is estimated that the annual operation of the tug can save about 300 tons of diesel consumption, reduce about 900 tons of carbon oxides and 12 tons of sulfide, effectively solve the problem of air pollutant emission caused by diesel propulsion of traditional tugs, and has the performance advantages of zero emission, no pollution, low noise and low energy consumption; At the same time, the charging of the tug can adapt to the high-voltage shore power technology pioneered by Lianyungang port. Under the fast-charging mode, it can be filled in 2 hours. It is a very safe, green, environmental friendly and practical port tug. Bosa lithium iron phosphate cell lf280 has obtained CCS type approval certificate, and has four advantages: high consistency (highly automated, intelligent and information-based production), high safety (square aluminum shell+explosion-proof valve combined cover plate, which has obtained the German Rhine tÜV explosion-proof certification), high performance (low internal resistance of battery, high discharge rate, stable discharge platform) and long service life (more than 7000 cycles). The ship was jointly designed by China Shipbuilding 712 Institute, Lianyungang Port holding group and China Shipbuilding 708 Institute, and built by the barge branch of Lianyungang Port holding group. It is the first time that pure battery power is applied to offshore tugs, and it is also another breakthrough in the application of Bosa marine lf280 battery in the field of ships. The smooth delivery and trial operation of the pure electric tugboat provides a benchmark demonstration and leading role for the construction of pure electric tugboats in the port, which is of great significance to promote the adjustment of port energy structure, accelerate the green and low-carbon transformation, and help achieve the “double carbon” goal. Bosa will also continue to strengthen research and continuously input high-quality and reliable products and services for the society. Gradually promoting the universal application of electrification in the field of ships, and accelerate the pace of the country to achieve the goal of carbon peak and carbon.

10,000 LG CHEM LITHIUM BATTERIES RECALLED OVER FIRE HAZARD 2021-08-24 00:00:00
August 19,2021: Around 10,000 residential storage system lithium batteries by LG Chem subsidiary LG Energy Solutions have been recalled because of a fire hazard, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission announced on August 4. The RESU 10 (Type-R) batteries were recalled after warnings were issued that they ‘can overheat, posing a risk of fire and emission of harmful smoke’. Five reports were received of the wall-mounted batteries, which store energy generated by solar panels, causing property damage and one injury, the CPSC said. The batteries were made in LG Chem’s factory in Nanjing, China, between 2017 and 2018, according to Korean media, which said the recall had caused the firm’s stock price to drop by 6.7%. In December 2020, around 1,815 units of the same model were recalled for the same reason, the CPSC having received five reports of fires resulting in minor property damage, but no injuries. The latest recall came just two days after a four-day lithium battery fire was put out at a utility-scale Tesla battery site in the Australian state of Victoria. International media reported that a 13-tonne lithium battery caught fire inside a shipping container and could easily have spread to other battery containers, but was kept under control and then finally put out. The ‘Victoria Big Battery’ was installed by French energy firm Neoen in 2017, when it was the largest grid-connected energy storage system in the world at 100MW/129MWh. Tesla owner Elon Musk famously offered to waive the installation fee if it could not be completed within 100 days—and it was. It was doubled in size in September 2020. Lithium battery fires are notoriously difficult to extinguish safely because they react with water, even when they are not alight. “Statistically it’s not if they fail, but when,” says George Brilmyer, CTO at HighWater Innovations and formerly R&D manager of separator firm Microporous. “It’s a million to one chance that a cell will fail but if you have tens of thousands of them on a cargo of containers, the statistics are against you that one is going to fail. With thermal runaway it’s then a cascading process as one by one ignites, and that’s why it takes days to put them out.” The batteries have to be soaked in water for long enough to make sure that the water gets right into the cells, otherwise they can reignite. Brilmyer believes the economic case for deploying lithium in containers is flawed. You are not moving them around, they are staying in a container on the ground, there’s no reason why you should be using lead at a fifth of the cost. “Parts of Australia are very warm, so lithium cells will probably need air conditioning on to keep them cool—well if you do the energy balance and take that into account it doesn’t add up.”

GM Recalling 73,000 Bolt EVs with LG battery at cost of $1 billion, Halts sales 2021-08-23 00:00:00
WASHINGTON, Aug 20(Reuters)-General Motors Co GM.N said on Friday it will recall about 73,000 Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles at a cost of$1 billion to address fire risks and indefinitely halt sales over the battery issue. The massive recall comes as GM is aggressively moving to ramp up electric vehicle sales. GM said it will seek reimbursement from its battery supplier, LG. The largest U.S. automaker said the recall covers all remaining Bolt vehicles not previously recalled in July.GM said it will replace defective battery modules in Chevrolet Bolt EVs and EUVs with new modules. It added it was pursuing commitments from LG for reimbursement of the recall. GM said earlier that previous Bolt recalls would cost about$800 million. The $1 billion is in addition to that, a spokesman said. In July, GM issued a new recall for nearly 69,000 Chevrolet Bolts for fire risks after reports of two fires and said it will replace defective battery modules as needed. GM said it will not sell Bolt vehicles until it is satisfied with the fix. It added it is "working aggressively with LG to increase production as soon as possible.GM will notify customers when replacement parts are ready." Some Bolt EVs recalled in July were first recalled in November for fire risks and at least one of the two new fires was in a vehicle that had already had the software update released as part of that recall. The July recall came after GM and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) urged Bolt owners to park their vehicles outside and away from homes after charging. GM in July had confirmed a total of nine Bolt fires. The automaker said in rare circumstances, the batteries supplied to GM for these vehicles may have two manufacturing defects–a torn anode tab and folded separator–present in the same battery cell, which increases the risk of fire. LG officials could not immediately be reached for comment. After investigation into the manufacturing processes at LG and disassembling battery packs, GM said it "discovered manufacturing defects in certain battery cells produced at LG manufacturing facilities beyond the Ochang, Korea, plant. GM and LG are working to rectify the cause of these defects." The new recall includes 9,335 Bolt EVs from model year 2019 that were not included in the previous recall and 63,683 2020–2022 model year Chevrolet Bolt EVs and EUVs. GM said owners of the vehicles in the new recall should park them outside immediately after charging and not leave them charging indoors overnight. https://www.nasdaq.com/articles/gm-recalling-73000-bolt-evs-at-cost-of-%241-billion-halts-sales-2021-08-20
